Extractions
Tooth extractions are sometimes recommended when a tooth cannot be predictably restored or when it may be affecting surrounding teeth and oral health. Wisdom teeth may also require removal if they are impacted, painful, difficult to clean or contributing to infection or crowding.
At our McMahons Point dental clinic, we provide assessments and treatment planning for tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth removal where appropriate. Every patient is different and treatment recommendations are based on your individual oral health needs, symptoms and clinical findings.
When Is a Tooth Extraction Recommended?
A tooth extraction may be recommended for a range of reasons, including:
- Severe tooth decay
- Dental infection or abscess
- Advanced gum disease
- Broken or damaged teeth
- Impacted wisdom teeth
- Orthodontic treatment planning
- Overcrowding of teeth
In some cases, alternative treatments may be available. Your dentist will discuss suitable options before proceeding with treatment.
Wisdom Teeth Concerns
Wisdom teeth are the last molars to develop and commonly emerge during the late teenage years or early adulthood. Some wisdom teeth grow normally, while others may become partially erupted or impacted.
Problems associated with wisdom teeth can include:
- Pain or swelling
- Infection around the tooth
- Difficulty cleaning the area
- Damage to neighbouring teeth
- Gum irritation
- Tooth decay
A dental examination and imaging may be recommended to assess the position and condition of wisdom teeth before treatment planning.
